You, Me & Friends “Amazing Activities”  *** Whalewatch Kaikoura ***

It was the morning of Day 7 of our “Four Islands Tour”, and the weather could not have been better for our 10am Whalewatch cruise. Flawless blue skies, flat calm sea, and not a breath of wind.

We boarded our modern vessel and were not more than 30 mins out before we spotted our first whale. He was a big bull Sperm Whale, and a stranger to these waters. These animals are territorial, but our guides hadn’t seen this one before. He sat on the surface blowing mist up through his blowhole as he filled his lungs with oxygen, then fluked his tail up out of the water as he dived into the depths of the Kaikoura canyon some 1600 metres to the bottom in search of giant squid.

He would spend 45mins to an hour underwater, so we moved on to another sighting. This time it was a pair of Humpbacks accompanied by a playful school of local Dusky dolphins. The two gentle giants rested on the surface, until one breached, raising her head out of the water, then slid below the surface. What an awesome experience our whale encounter was!

We arrived back into Kaikoura at 1pm with big bundle of delicious blue cod and chips waiting for us at Coopers Catch. Another brilliant day on tour!

Oh my gosh, we all had a fantastic day out. Thank you so much. I really didn’t expect to like all those weird and wonderful snacks during the "Curious Food Train" activity, and didn’t think they would all participate. The staff all keep thanking us for such a great day. Looking forward to next years event!
