Stepping in to the intimate, air-conditioned, tiered seating theatre, we were transported to a world of myth and legend as the stage came to life with vibrant colours and enchanting music. This centuries-old art form combines intricate puppetry, live music, and storytelling to create a mesmerizing cultural experience like no other.
The water puppetry tradition dates back to the 11th century, when Vietnamese farmers would entertain themselves during the rice harvest season by performing puppet shows on the flooded rice fields.
Today, the Hanoi Water Puppet Theatre continues this rich cultural legacy, captivating audiences with its unique blend of puppetry and folk music. Skilled puppeteers manipulate wooden puppets that dance, glide and even sprout water across the stage, accompanied by a live orchestra playing traditional Vietnamese instruments such as the đàn bầu (monochord) and đàn nhị (two-stringed fiddle).
The performances showcase a variety of scenes depicting Vietnamese folklore, rural life, and historical legends. From mythical dragons soaring through the water, to farmers tending to their rice fields, each act offers a glimpse into Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.
Attending a show at the Hanoi Water Puppet Theatre is a great experience for visitors to the city, offering a captivating journey into the heart of Vietnamese culture and tradition.
