April 2023: “Taste of Tasmania Tour”

After another great breakfast at Raindrops restaurant, we hit the road bound south for Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, a ‘UNESCO World Heritage’ site nestled in the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness.

After an hour of travelling through ancient rainforests and alpine heaths, we arrived at the huge carpark outside the Cradle Mountain visitor centre. From there, we caught the shuttle bus for 20 minutes to the Dove Lake viewing centre. This brand-new observation centre offers all weather viewing of the gorgeous Dove Lake, with Cradle Mountain as the backdrop.

The park caters for all levels of adventurers, from leisurely walks around Dove Lake at the mountains base, to challenging hikes like the renowned Overland Track, a multi-day trek that unveils the parks diverse ecosystems. Enchanting waterfalls, alpine meadows and mirror-like lakes create a symphony of sights that captivate every nature lover. We took the short walk to Glacier Bay viewpoint, then shuttled back to Ronny Creek.

Wildlife enthusiasts are in for a treat here, as the park is home to wombats, wallabies, and the elusive Tasmanian devil. Birdwatchers can spot endemic species against the backdrop of ancient forests. We were able to get very close to some wombats as they munched the grass close to the boardwalk, completely uncaring that we were there.

Come sunset, the hues over Cradle Mountain paint a mesmerizing canvas and as night falls, the crisp mountain air reveals a celestial spectacle. With a range of accommodation options, from cozy cabins to wilderness lodges, Cradle Mountain offers a haven for those seeking a harmonious blend of adventure and tranquillity, making it a quintessential stop for any Tasmanian journey.

Oh my gosh, we all had a fantastic day out. Thank you so much. I really didn’t expect to like all those weird and wonderful snacks during the "Curious Food Train" activity, and didn’t think they would all participate. The staff all keep thanking us for such a great day. Looking forward to next years event!
