We had a leisurely start to day 2 of our ‘Vietnam and The Lost City of Angkor Oct19’ tour, with a lovely buffet breakfast followed by a meander through the nearby streets lined with shops. We then headed down to Hoan Kiem Lake, a serene oasis amidst the bustling streets.
Steeped in history and surrounded by legend, this picturesque lake offers a tranquil retreat for locals and tourists alike. We wandered around, taking in the sights of everyday people enjoying their Sunday with their families. As we strolled along the tree-lined pathways encircling the lake, we were captivated by the scenic beauty that unfolded before us. The emerald waters shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the lush greenery and vibrant flowers that adorned its banks.
After having lunch at a Colonial bar overlooking the lake, and embarking on a cyclo tour around the old quarter, we then headed back to the lake where we met our guide and he explained the history of the lake.
We went over the iconic red bridge to see the Ngoc Son Temple, and the preserved remains of two huge turtles, a species that is now all but extinct. These freshwater turtles were about 1.5 metres in length with one dying in the 1960s, and the other only dying in 2014. Both were believed to be many hundreds of years old.
Hoan Kiem Lake is not only a place of natural beauty, but also a hub of cultural significance. Legend has it that the lake is home to the mythical Golden Turtle God, and its waters are said to hold mythical powers. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle and busy of the city, or hoping to immerse yourself in Hanoi’s rich cultural heritage, Hoan Kiem Lake offers a tranquil experience.
