You, Me & Friends “Favourite Places” ***Tasmania Zoo***

April 2023: Day 6 of our “Taste of Tasmania” Tour saw some of our group elect to go shopping for the morning, while the rest of us headed off for Tasmania Zoo. Nestled amidst the lush landscapes of Tasmania, although a relatively small park, the Tasmania Zoo exhibits the largest collection of rare, exotic and native species (over 100) in Tasmania, and the second largest collection of primates in any private Australian Zoo.

This not-so-typical zoo offers an up-close and personal encounter with some of Australia’s unique and endangered species. We were able to cuddle and have photos taken with a few select animals, and hand-feed the kangaroos. As we wandered through the well-designed exhibits, we found ourselves face-to-face with the iconic Tasmanian Devil, a spirited marsupial that stole the show with its quirky antics. What sets Tasmania Zoo apart, is its emphasis on education and interaction. Visitors of all ages can engage in informative keeper talks, where passionate staff share fascinating facts about the resident animals.

We embarked on a fun walk in the ‘Jurassic Swamp’, which imagines how the area would have looked 150 million years ago, with very realistic dinosaur statues peaking out through the foliage. The ‘Jurassic Swamp’ homes over 40 life size dinosaurs, which can be seen up close in a ‘super-sized’ experience. The walk provides educational signs that promote conservation messages, and the similarities between the extinction of the dinosaur and more recently, the Tasmanian tiger.

The beautifully landscaped grounds provide a pleasant setting for a leisurely stroll, and picnic areas offer a perfect spot to refuel and reflect on the day’s animal encounters. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or just looking for a delightful day out, Tasmania Zoo offers a unique and memorable experience that goes beyond the typical zoo visit.

Oh my gosh, we all had a fantastic day out. Thank you so much. I really didn’t expect to like all those weird and wonderful snacks during the "Curious Food Train" activity, and didn’t think they would all participate. The staff all keep thanking us for such a great day. Looking forward to next years event!
