On the morning of Day One we are collected from our Whangarei homes and drive to Auckland. Here we check in to our hotel and start our exploration of NZ’s largest city with Parnell. Billed as Auckland’s oldest suburb, Parnell dates from the earliest days of the European settlement of Auckland in 1841 and is a charming mixture of heritage buildings, upscale boutiques and well-supplied op-shops.
Day Two takes us to prime offerings old and new of the city centre and viaduct area. The day includes the Unleashed experience at Weta Workshop – discovering the secrets behind the special effects techniques that have put Kiwi film-making on the map – and the Auckland Maritime Museum. The Maritime Museum was established in 1993 and has continually grown to include fantastic exhibits on NZ’s maritime past, present and future.
No trip to the ‘City of Sails’ would be complete without time spent on the water, and Day Three includes exactly that. From the attractive Ferry Terminal building on the city waterfront, we take the ferry to Devonport – Auckland’s best seaside escape. Heritage buildings surrounded by Auckland’s volcanic landscape make for a unique experience and we will spend some time exploring the hidden stories of this area.
Day Four we enjoy a final breakfast in the city before making our way home at a leisurely pace, to be delivered to our letterboxes ready to share stories about our adventures on the ultimate long weekend.
