This 9 Day / 8 nights away explores the Forgotten Highway of Taranaki.

On day one we depart you will be collected early from your Whangarei homes as we head south to Hamilton (1 night) with stops along the way. Just south of Hamilton we explore two of Waitomo’s caves including the incredible modern architectural wonder of the Ruakuri staircase ascending deep into the cavern. We finish day two at Tauramanui (2 nights).
The next day our 5 & ½ hour rail cart excursion takes us through breath-taking landscapes, including the line’s longest tunnel at 1.5km. Leaving Tauramanui, we travel down highway 43 – “The Forgotten Highway”. Our journey takes us via the the Moki tunnel & the quirky old Whangamomona Pub in the republic of Whanamomona! We’ll have lunch here, then it’s over the Strathmore Saddle and on to New Plymouth (1 night). The next day we visit Mt Taranaki in the Egmont National Park, then in the afternoon continue on to Whanganui (1 night).
During our morning in Whanganui, we board the MV Wairua Riverboat for a 1 & ½ hour cruise on the Whanganui River,
Then head north via the Horopito Motors museum/scrapyard before arriving at Chateau Tongariro (2 nights).
We have a full day in the National park area to enjoy the many walks and scenic spots. On the Friday, board the Northern Explorer Train from National Park to Auckland (1 night).
After some morning sightseeing in Auckland we head back to Whangarei to arrive back at your homes in the late evening.
