Our journey begins with pick-up from our Whangarei homes. From there we travel by van to Auckland and fly overnight to our stopover point (2 nights). Then it is on to Prague (4 nights). There’s something extra-special about Prague that sets it apart from the other big cities of Europe. Whether it’s the Gothic cathedrals and Baroque palaces, or the more than 200 gardens scattered across the city, Prague offers a true escape from the modern world.
From Prague we travel overland to Munich (4 nights), stopping along the way to take in iconic sights. Widely known for being the home of Oktoberfest, iconic taverns such as Hofbrauhaus have been serving since 1589. However, there is so much more to Munich and the easy-paced itinerary is the perfect way to get to know the Bavarian capital.
Next up we head to Vilshofen, where we board our Avalon Waterways vessel for the Danube Dreams River Cruise (7 nights). Cruise along the peaceful Danube River through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary—stopping at some of Central Europe’s most splendid capitals and charming towns along the way. Visit Passau, Germany—called the “City of Three Rivers” at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. In Linz, Austria, walk around the Hauptplatz, Austria’s largest medieval square. Vienna, the “City of Music,” makes an immediate impression with its lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace and neo-renaissance Vienna Opera House. In Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, take a guided walk through the delightful Old Town and to the Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral. In Budapest, the vibrant capital of Hungary, a local expert shows you all the must-see sights.
We disembark our cruise in Budapest (3 nights). Budapest is famous for its wonderful architecture, relaxing thermal baths and delectable cuisine. Leaning into its history as a Roman and Turkish outpost, and more recently as part of the communist USSR, Budapest is a unique part of Europe ready to be discovered.
Here we say ‘Búcsú’ to Europe and fly home, with an overnight layover to break up the journey. We arrive into Auckland to our waiting van ready to deliver us safely to our homes.
