Marvellous Matakana

Hosted Day Tour

Departing Sat 31st Jan 26

On the morning of the tour, head to your nearest determined pick-up point and jump aboard the YMAF van to head south. We’ll take a quick stop at Wellsford to grab a takeaway coffee, then it is on to the picturesque village of Matakana.

In Matakana, we’ll start with some time at the famous Farmer’s Market – a hub of local producers and crafters of artisan goods. If arts and crafts are more your thing, try the adjacent craft market at the old Creamery Hall for unique finds. Also, don’t forget Matakana’s boutiques – a treasure trove of books, clothes and handmade chocolates. After our discovery time, we’ll meet up and share a picnic lunch which will include a range of goods purchased by your Host fresh at the market.

After lunch, we’ll head out of the village centre to Heron’s Flight Vineyard, Matakana’s original cellar door. Here, the Hoskin’s family will take us through a tasting of their Italian varietals grown in Matakana since 1987. Continuing on an Italian theme, just next door is Charlie’s Gelato, where we’ll stop for something sweet.

Next we head to The Secret Garden & Matakana Sculpture Habitat. Matakana’s best kept secret, here nature is sculpted into a fabulous oasis and we’ll take a stroll through the wonderland.

Our final stop in Matakana is 8-Wired Brewery. Try one of their tasting paddles of beers or a cider, or you can opt for one of their selection of wines or non-alcoholic beverages to finish the day in style, before we head back to Whangarei.

Oh my gosh, we all had a fantastic day out. Thank you so much. I really didn’t expect to like all those weird and wonderful snacks during the "Curious Food Train" activity, and didn’t think they would all participate. The staff all keep thanking us for such a great day. Looking forward to next years event!
