Finding your travel groove-Our Tour Grading Levels

Finding Your Travel Groove – Our Tour Grading Levels

At You, Me and Friends, we believe the world should be explored by everyone – no matter your age, energy level, or how many times you’ve said, “Let me just find my reading glasses.” That’s why we’ve created our Tour Grading System – a simple, fun way to match the right trip with your style of travelling.

Think of it like choosing a dance: are you a “slow waltz” kind of traveller, or “ready to tango” across the trails?

What is Tour Grading?

Tour grading is our way of showing how active a trip is – so you can pick the pace that suits you. Whether you’re happiest window-shopping in a small town or hiking to waterfalls, there’s a tour with your name on it.

And if you’re not sure, don’t worry-the grades are just a guide –our lovely trip designers are always just a phone call away for a friendly chat.

Meet the Fab Four – Our Travel Styles

We’ve split our tours into four fabulous categories-Ambler, Roamer, Ranger and Trailblazer. Here is an overview of each grading level.

Ambler Tour

Laid-back and loving it

Perfect for those who enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.

Am I ready to Amble? Ask yourself:

  • Can I step in and out of a passenger van with a rail to hold?
  • Am I comfortable sitting for an hour or two at a time while driving or flying?
  • Can I walk around for a short distance – like going into the Town Basin for a browse around the shops? It’s ok if this is with a stick to help
  • Can I go up or down 3 or 4 steps with a handrail?

If yes – welcome to Team Ambler!

Roamer Tour

Explorers with a spring in their step (or walking stick)

Ideal for those who like a gentle wander with the odd adventure thrown in.

Am I ready to Roam? Ask yourself:

  • Can I stroll from the Town Basin to the Waka and Wave sculptures and back again at a relaxed pace? It’s ok if this is with a stick to help
  • Can I walk a short distance uphill or downhill if I take breaks along the way?
  • If there isn’t a lift available, can I walk up or down a flight of stairs?
  • Am I comfortable getting on and off public transport like buses or trains?
  • Do I enjoy some down-time as well as activities?

Sounds like you? You’re a Roamer!

Ranger Tour

Curious, confident, and up for a bit more challenge

For those who love getting off the beaten path – with a few creature comforts still, of course.

Am I ready to Range? Ask yourself:

  • Can I walk from the Town Basin to the Te Matua a Pohe Bridge (the ‘fishhook’ bridge) and back again?
  • Am I ok walking uphill and downhill?
  • Am I ok walking on rough or uneven surfaces?
  • If there isn’t a lift available, can I walk up and down the stairs of a 2-storey building?
  • Can I get up a step of 30cm high?
  • Can I get down to sit on the floor and get back up again with some help – like pulling up on a chair or if I hold someone’s hand?

If you nodded along – you’re a Ranger!

Trailblazer Tour

Bold, adventurous, and ready to take on the world

For those who aren’t afraid of a little sweat with their sightseeing!

Am I ready to Trailblaze? Ask yourself:

  • Can I walk the full way around the Town Basin Loop?
  • Am I comfortable walking uphill and downhill?
  • Am I comfortable on rough and challenging terrain?
  • Am I comfortable taking the stairs regularly?
  • Am I comfortable in a range of settings on land and in the water?
  • Can I get up a step of 50cm high?
  • Can I get down to sit on the floor and get back up again without help?

If you’re shouting “Absolutely!” – you, my friend, are a Trailblazer!

Not Quite Sure?

No worries! If you’re somewhere in between, that’s totally fine. Many of our travellers find they fit a little bit into two categories – and that’s where our customisable tours shine.

Give us a call or drop us a line – we’ll help you find the perfect fit and get you on the road with confidence and excitement.
